If your Planday workspace uses Punch Clock for time tracking, you can allow employees to punch in and out for breaks during their shifts.

Depending on your setup, breaks can be punched via:

Note: By default, Punch Clock breaks are unpaid.

How to set up breaks in the Punch Clock

Go to Planday web > Settings > Punch Clock > Advanced > Access to breaks in Punch Clock.

  • Select the Departments where breaks should be active.

    • All Employee groups and types linked to that Department will be included.

  • (Optional) Uncheck the Show break button if you want to prevent a group from punching into a break (for example, contractors or fixed salaried staff)

  • (Optional) Enable the option Can edit breaks if a group, such as admins or managers, should have access to add, edit or delete the breaks in the Punch Clock.

Automatic vs. manual breaks

If you enable Punch Clock breaks, they will overwrite automatic breaks from Break rules in the same Department.

Tip: Avoid using both automatic and Punch Clock breaks at the same time.

When you activate breaks in the Punch Clock, you will be greeted with the following message:

  • Automatic breaks will still show on the Schedule as a forecast before the shift.

  • Once the shift ends, only the punched break remains.

  • For past shifts, automatic break forecasts are not applied.

The example below shows what a break looks like on a shift when it is only used for the forecast.

A manual break will always remain on the shift as long as it does not overlap with a punched-in break.
